Privacy policy

Last updated October 2026

This is a starting policy written in plain language. Before CitizensPoll grows large, have it reviewed by someone familiar with Canadian (PIPEDA) and American privacy law.

What we collect

  • Your mobile phone number, to verify you and to stop repeat voting.
  • The country of your number, to decide which polls you can vote in.
  • Your password, if you create one. It is stored in scrambled (hashed) form by our sign-in provider, so nobody, including us, can read it.
  • Optional details you choose to give: province or state, age range, gender, and how you voted in the last national election.
  • Your ballots, stored without your name or number.
  • Suggestions you send us, with the country of your number if you are signed in.

We do not ask for your name, address or email, and we do not use advertising trackers.

How your votes are kept private

Opinions on political issues are sensitive information, so we designed CitizensPoll to keep them apart from your identity. Each ballot is labelled with a one-way code that stops you voting twice but cannot be turned back into your phone number. Your optional details are copied onto the ballot without anything that identifies you.

We only publish totals and percentages, and group breakdowns only once a group has at least 10 voters.

Who we share it with

We never sell or share your phone number or individual answers. We use these service providers to run the site: Supabase (database and sign-in), Twilio (sending verification texts) and Vercel (website hosting). They may store data in the United States.

We may publish and share aggregated poll results, which contain no personal information.

Your choices

You can change or remove your optional details at any time from your account page, and you can delete your account and phone number there too. Ballots already cast stay in the totals, since they cannot be linked back to you.

Voting is intended for people 18 and older.
